"You can't be serious....The ball was on the line"
John Mcenroe takes you on a tour inside the players room and in the talk brushing on a bit on the best players, events Wimbledon has seen. I wasn't lucky enough to meet Mcenroe in person but the 3 D illusion created at the Wimbledon museum is amazing. So there was I at Wimbledon. Wow Boris Becker my most fav sports icon as a kid and guess still one of my fav's ruled here didn't he.
Recently some magazine published a list of 10 things that money can't buy.All England Tennnis Club membership happens to be one of them. They say the easiest way to be a member of the club is to win the Wimbledon Championship. The start of what is today one of the most charismatic championships was pretty modest and funny though. The club didn't have enough money to buy a new roller to maintain their courts so someone proposed to keep a chamionship to raise some money through spectatorship. It's come quite a long way since then hasn't it !!!
Also was cool to know where a few terms came from. The word "Service" came through because the rich guys who played the game got there servants along. The servant would toss the ball up in the air (served) for them so that they could hit it across to start the point.
Also Wimbledon is never complete without its stories on rain, fans, royalty ,players antics .Last game Mcenroe played there was against Agassi which he lost. While going out Agassi had to be reminded by Mcenroe to bow down to the royal box.In Mcenroe's words "Define irony,in my last match here I am teaching manners to the next generation". He plays for the senior circuit these days and i read his quote on his own behaviour somewhere "In my younger days i used to get fined for it and now they pay me extra for it ;)". A cue to be taken by the ICC i guess where people get fined even for nodding there heads in dissent. We all see sports for the skill for sure(Not tht Mcenroe or Becker had any less of it) but its the personalities that keep the game alive and kicking.
